The magnificent temples of Angkor reside in this region in northern Cambodia. They attract millions of travellers to the country each year, and while their beauty is undeniable, there is much more to discover in Cambodia’s wild north beyond Siem Reap. Once home to the Khmers who built much of their empire here, you can uncover remnants of their past not only in the Angkor archaeological sites but in the more remote, lesser-visited temples in and around the city. If you’re not feeling templed out, head to Battambang for more temples, as well as French era colonial buildings and some of the country’s best street food.
Venture out to the more undeveloped regions, and you will meet ethnic minority groups, incredible wildlife, rolling hills, tropical jungles and charming little towns. Off-the-beaten-track areas like Kratie, Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri see far fewer visitors and offer authentic local and wildlife experiences. Get a taste of rural life in the town of Kratie sitting along the Mekong and perhaps you may even spot the elusive Irrawaddy dolphin. In Mondulkiri, learn more about Cambodia’s tribal minorities and conservation projects; a real highlight is the Elephant Valley Project helping to improve the health and wellbeing of elephants in the area. Up in the more remote northwestern corner, Ratanakiri is excellent for the adventurous traveller, known for its natural beauty and trekking, where you may spot some of the most unique wildlife in Cambodia.
